Mills-on-the-Air 12th/13th May 2018.

West Kent ARS are supporting Mills-on-the-Air in 2018 by operating GB2NW on HF and VHF from the Nutley windmill, on Ashdown Forest East Sussex. The mill and radio operation will be running from 11am to 5pm each day. The locator is JO01AB and WAB TQ42.

Nutley windmill is one of only a handful of Open Trestle Post Mills still in existence in the UK, and is itself in full working order. The windmill is constructed wholly of wood and has two floors, with the oldest timber dated to the 16th century. However, the mill is known to have only been in its present location since 1830, and was in commercial use until 1908 after which it fell into disrepair, until in 1968 the Uckfield and District Preservation Society was formed with the aim of restoring the mill.

Parking for visitors to Nutley Windmill is at Friends car park (TQ 456 288) on the Crowborough Rd, with a track from the rear of the car park down to the windmill, around 400m. There is very limited car park space for disabled persons by the mill, and access would be along a very rough track.

2018 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Uckfield and District Preservation Society, which has much more detail about the mill and their work in restoring and preserving this feature of our heritage. Further details about the mill, its open days and of volunteering with the society can be found on their website www.udps.co.uk
